Background

I am currently a 4th dan in Bushido-Zen Kenpo Karate and Vice President of the National Institute of Pressure Point Arts (NIPPA). My current instructor is Master Robert J. Moran, 7th dan in Bushido-Zen Kenpo Karate and President of NIPPA. Much of the Bushido-Zen system is explained on DVDs and video tapes available from Bushido Productions.

I also serve as the faculty advisor to WPI's Society of Martial Artists (SOMA). SOMA is a martial arts club that is style-neutral. That is, martial artist of all styles are welcome in the club.

A Few Links (There are Many Out There)

  1. UFC. This is the grand-daddy of mixed martial arts competitions in the U.S. Let's get it on!

  2. Pride. This is the premier mixed martial arts competition in Japan.

  3. Mass Destruction. This is the top mixed martial arts organization in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  4. SherDog.com. The premier site on the web for mixed martial arts news and commentary.

  5. MaxFighting.com. Lots of mixed martial arts news.

  6. MMA.tv. More mixed martial arts news and products.

  7. OnTheMat.com. Even more mixed martial arts news and products.

  8. Eric Paulson. Paulson is one of the mixed martial arts gurus I really admire. His tapes and DVDs are excellent.

  9. Mark Hatmaker. Hatmaker is another mixed martial arts guru I really admire. His tapes and DVDs are also excellent.

  10. Bushido Productions. For some interesting tapes and DVDs on pressure point self defense, both on your feet and on the ground, go to this site. Bushido's various dit da jows are also excellent and inexpensive. The dit da jow herbs are sent to you dry. Just add rubbing alcohol to make a gallon!

  11. Martial Arts Video Reviews. These guys review darn near every martial arts tape and DVD produced. Before you buy, check out their review.

  12. Matt Furey. Matt Furey is a former world champion wrester who has developed an outstanding fitness program for martial artists (and, really, everyone). It's all based on bodyweight exercises -- no equipment (weights, machines, etc.) is needed. And you can do most of the workouts in an area as small as the average bathroom. I have my martial arts students at WPI do many of Furey's workouts and they are superb.

Furey has also developed a bunch of other interesting products such as a "Chinese long life system" (his wife is Chinese and he spends a lot of time in China), an internet marketing system, and a system for eliminating carpel tunnel syndrome. Check out his stuff and sign-up for his free newsletter.

  13. Stadion.com. Although Matt Furey has an excellent stretching system, the world's foremost authority on the subject is probably Thomas Kurz. Check out his "stretching scientifically" method, as well as his other products. I find them to be excellent and teach them to my martial arts students at WPI. Of note is that Kurz's methods enable you to kick high "cold" -- i.e., without any warm-up. His argument is that, if you're attacked on the street and need to kick, you can't very well tell the attacker to "give you a minute to warm-up." Sign-up for Kurz's free e-mail newsletter on the site.

  14. Egoscue Method. A system of exercise and physical therapy that is very similar to Matt Furey's method is the Egoscue Method. This site has a directory that helps you find Egoscue workshops, instructors, etc., near you.
